Travis Greene
Intentional

   By Christopher Herron, BlackGospel.com

One of the most anticipated albums heading into the holiday season is The Hill,  Travis GreeneĎs long-awaited project on RCA Inspiration. The lead song,  Intentional, came out in the spring and entered Billboard's Gospel Music charts at #1. The followup single, "Made A Way,"  are rising at #6.
GreeneĎs gargantuan success may come as a surprise to some but those with their ear to the ground know Travis has been one to watch for since his debut explosion in 2010 that earned him a Stellar award nomination for Best New Artist of The Year.

Travis possesses a unique vocal tone and a knack for notable songwriting, all keys to a promising artistic future. Couple these divine gifts with his crossover appeal and awe-inspiring human stories and you have the making of a man destined to distinguish himself in a crowded field of recording artists.  BlackGospel.com had a chat with one of the yearís breakout artists about his sizzling hit, Intentional, his longtime friend, Mali Music, and his ultimate hope for the new album, The Hill.

Letís begin with your debut album,  Stretching Out, a great debut album with Pendulum Records.  I was there at the Stellar Awards when your name  was announced as one of the nominees for Best New Artist of the Year.  Itís five years later.
Where have you been?

Travis: Man I was just evolving as a person.  I was obviously doing a little work but Iíve been enjoying my family. I got married. I had a son. Iíve been enjoying life. Itís been great for me and now Iím back with the new album, The Hill. Iím stronger, I think Iím smarter and Iíve evolved as a writer and producer and so Iím excited about sharing the new music with the world.

Iím going to ask you a few questions to know the man behind the music, for instance, whatís been your favorite instrument?

Travis: Honestly, the keyboard is because the drum sets were always occupied. You would have ten people in church sitting on the bench waiting to get in and so I was like, ďman ainít nobody sitting on the other side, so Iím going to play the keys.Ē I just love music.  I donít even understand the theory behind it. I think itís just a gift that God gave His people, this universal language so I love it.

Youíre an internationally traveled man, Iím curious to know what is your favorite city.

Travis: Oh man, the first thing that comes to mind is Miami.  I really love South Florida. Itís a breath of fresh air. I really love it more than any other big city. I just like the pace and the swag down there. Miami dudes are swagged out, just chilling. Itís like Never Never Land.  No one gets old in Miami, so I love that city.

Tell me about a hairstyle you rocked back in the day that was either fly or foolish.

Travis: [Laughs} Thatís a very funny question.  When I met my wife eight year ago, I had twists. I donít even know what that was all about. Iím delivered from that now. It was a little twist I used to rock but it was so hard to maintain.

And finally, a nickname that you had growing up.

Travis: My grandfather called me frog legs. I still donít know what that was about but I had like supernatural legs.  My older sister calls me peanut to this day,  PJ, peanut junior.  So when I got a hair cut as a kid, I had a peanut head, so thatís one of my nicknames growing up.

Letís go back to the album. Love the new songs.  My favorites are Made A Way, You Got Up and of course your testimonial on The Hill.  But your breakout hit has been Intentional. Could you ever have imagined such success?

Travis: You know Chris, it was anticipated by the label but you still canít imagine the success as an artist.  You never can anticipate the feeling that comes with it when it happens.  We knew it was a big song, RCA knew it was going to have a lot of success, but thereís nothing like living it.  It happened so fast we really havenít had time to stand back and take everything in. We havenít had a party for any of the successes this year.  It was like on to the next! I was warned by other artists that itís a snowball effect, once it starts rolling itís moving fast.  It was definitely anticipated but still overwhelming at the same time.

With the new found success and growing demands on your schedule, what are the biggest changes that youíve had to make to your life, your family obligations, and your overall ministry?

Travis: Itís hard to explain to people. It consists of adjustments. Itís not just me but my wife and my son who are both affected by it. My wife calls it a family business. The amount of time Iím able to spend at home has been less. They travel with me whenever they can. Itís definitely been an adjustment though, itís a new day but itís become the new norm.

Your music and your voice frequently gets compared to a long time friend of yours and a current label mate Ė Mali Music. Tell us a bit about your personal and artistic relationship.

Travis: Whatís really special about our friendship is that we were boys before any of this happened for us on RCA. Back then, he would come over and spend days at my house in Georgia. People would tease us and say, ďYíall know youíre special. Do you know whatís about to happen in your lives?Ē  It took a little longer than we even thought.  Weíve been writing and singing music for so long but you know, itís not a shocker to either one of us.

We grew up in charismatic churches who have people who are gifted and prophetic, who told us what was coming so all our lives we knew what would happen.  Itís always been fun for us, we get each other. Mali often teases me.  Weíre actually more different than alike.  I think the only similarity is our vocal tone.  Mali is a music lover and Iím a lyrical lover. I think thatís our difference.  Iím always trying to preach, always trying to get people saved, just all the way turnít up. But heís the same way about music.  Mali would lock himself up in a room for days and work on music. Weíd be like, ďMali, you got to eat.Ē Heís like, ďOh man, you got to hear this.Ē  So thatís our difference.

Finally, whatís your greatest hope for this album and how it will resonate with the public? What kind of impact are you hoping to make, both spiritually and artistically with, The Hill?

Travis: Great question bro.  International impact man, thatís my goal.  Accomplishing a successful Gospel ďcareerĒ here in America is not my goal, has never been my goal. My goal is really to impact the world and thatís what we are called to do in the Bible, so thatís what Iím hoping to do, reach people all over the world and just inspire people to know that God is alive and Heís ours.

Gospel singer Travis Greene's hit song "Intentional" was the top selling gospel track in the country according to both SoundScan and Billboard.com. The song also holds the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Hot Gospel Songs chart. An inspiring and melodic track, the talented singer-songwriter helps his audience believe that everything that happens is part of a bigger plan.
In reference to the single's latest status, Travis says, "When I heard the news about Intentional reaching Number 1, I was stunned and ecstatic. My prayer for this song was that it would simply encourage people around the world to trust God more and know that He does everything intentionally for our good!" "Intentional" is the first single off of Travis' highly-anticipated debut album "The Hill," which was live recorded late last year in his hometown of Charlotte, NC. "Intentional"
was nominated for a Grammy for  Best Gospel Performance/Song. Includes the hits, "Intentional" and "Made A Way."
