tobyMac Breaks Down How He Earned His
First No. 1 Hit In Over
Five Years"

TobyMac's recent single, "I Just Need U" entered Billboard's Contemporary Christian music charts at #1. It's the followup to his hit from last summer, "Love Broke Thru," from the album This Is Not A Test, that made it to #3.

I Just Need You is on his first studio album in three years, The Elements. Also on the CD are Scars and I Just Need You's followup, Everything, which is near the top 10 on Billboard's CCM charts

TobyMac was also on the charts as part of Mandisa's hit "Bleed The Same." They are joined by Kirk Franklin on the collaboration.

I Just Need You marks the first time in over five years that tobyMac made it to No. 1. Six months after its release, its still in the top 5.

In 2012, the 53-year-old's sixth album, Eye on It, topped the Billboard 200 -- the first time a Christian act had done so since 1997. As I just need U holds firm, the track's key players explain how it came together.

"[The song] started in a session writing for the band Finding Favour, but they said it wasn't for them," explained Toby. "I thought about [it] and began plowing through my feelings. The world tricks us into thinking certain things will fulfill us, [but] time and again I end up hungry. But when I look to my faith, I begin to find a permanent fulfillment. There's depth and there's soul, which is what you would expect from a seasoned artist."

"We sat on it, but it took a while to find the verses. I think we had 25 versions of the song to get to this point, said producer Bryan Fowler. "But we've worked together for a while now and know how to pull the best out of each other. We got into a cool head space and did something we loved. [But] I don't think either of us assumed it was going to be a single."

"There was something special about this [song], from what it's saying to its emotional punch, said Capitol Christian Music Group chief creative officer Brad O'Donnell. "At the same time, it was a little dangerous, [because it's] new territory for Toby. You can never plan to release the biggest song of an artist's career, or the biggest song in our format in a long time -- they're nice surprises when you're doing good work."

"It feels so great to be back in the studio again working passionately on songs that will hopefully meet people right where they are," shares TobyMac. I Just Need U is where I land time and again after my futile attempts to handle life on my own. I AM a born defector learning every day that the sweetest place and the only RIGHT place for me, is turning back and falling into the arms of a loving God."

The multi-platinum selling artist provided fans an early glimpse of the song with a single release party at Citizen in Downtown Franklin, Tennessee on January 4. Fans celebrated the release of TobyMac's first new single in two plus years, and were treated to an exclusive meet & greet along with a limited edition vinyl 45 of the single.

This is his story behind the song ..

"I don't know how it happens. But, somehow or other, the world tricks us into thinking its going to satisfy us. And, it happens to me over and over and over again. The very things that I look to to satisfy me, fail me.

"How can I wake up to a house full of beautiful kids, but still wake up heavy hearted? Wake up lonely? I think its because I'm counting on things that will never satisfy me. I think its easy to look to those things to fulfill us.
"Even as far as a husband and wife relationship. When we start looking to that to fulfill us, sooner or later, it will let us down. That's why, in this song, I just cry out...I just need U.

"And, then, you move into the spiritual realm of it all. I've always thought of Psalm 23. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

"And, I think, for the first time, I saw that verse through the eyes of a spiritual fight and not a physical fight. Those are the things that birthed the song, I Just Need U.

"I hope it moves you the way it moved me."

TobyMac's Fulfillment Comes Through Servitude

TobyMac was just 19 when he came on the Christian music scene with the hip-hop/rock trio DC Talk. Many songs he wrote like Jesus Freak and Luv is a Verb became crossover hits, breaking into mainstream radio with a bold Christian message. He has since become a solo artist with a #1 hit in I Just Need U.

Toby shared, "I want to be as transparent as I can be. Sometimes I think people think that, you know, when your music is coming from a Christian perspective that you're supposed to have all the answers and you're supposed to have it all together. But I think that day is long behind us. Like I don't have it all together. I don't have all the answers."

As he admitted, "I'm a recovering perfectionist. I want things to be right. And sometimes I can drive people around me crazy. And sometimes it gets better and sometimes it doesn't. So now I kinda have a couple rules that help me to not be a perfectionist. One is: Does the song make you feel something? If the song makes you feel something, then it's good. And the second one is: does the song have a unique perspective? You can sing about love 100 times, but is there a unique look on love this time? Will people leave talking about that song, talking about the concept?"

After over 30 years of touring and working with artists like Lecrae, the Newsboys, Jamie Grace, Mandisa, Kirk Franklin and others, he's also learned the significance of collaboration.

"It's easy," he said, "for people to overlook how much of a group effort putting out a record is, or writing a song can be. I need co-writers and co-producers and guys that help us put our show together and I definitely need a strong wife, and I have that, and I'm thankful for her. I've just found that I'm not a one-man show. There are people that have strengths that I don't have."

And with six Grammy awards and over 11 million units in career sales, it's obviously working.
He said, "I'm honored to be surrounded by guys that will tell me the truth about myself, the good, the bad, and the ugly. As a leader of an organization or a band or a tour, you could totally, you know, seclude yourself and stay away from people or you can be in people's lives and let them be in your lives. And that route, that path is harder. It's way harder. But it's richer. It's just pursuing it with passion and being willing to listen to other people and-and take your hands off of it when they're operating in their gifting."

Toby would discover a higher calling when he lost his father in 2015.

"My dad was a driven man" he described. "He definitely taught me to push myself to be the best I could be. Keep your eye on what you're trying to pursue. Lock in and go hard. That's kinda how my dad raised me."

While losing his dad was hard, it was the three years Toby spent taking care of him that changed his life.

"Dementia is tough," he shared. "It's tough to watch. Just to see a man that did everything I needed for me, all of a sudden I'm meeting his needs. I learned really what love was through caring for my dad. It's when you're in the trenches on behalf of someone else, it's the deepest love, and I'd never really been there. And I love my children. I love my wife. But there's a deeper love when you're doing everything for someone and they can't do it for themselves."

In true TobyMac fashion, that experience inspired the lyrics to his hit song Love Feels Like.

It also showed Toby what his life and music was about all along.

He said, "God made me to serve. Serving is the ultimate calling. It's the most - the most beautiful thing we can do. I've always viewed it as God breathed something through me to serve people. God breathed something through me in the form of a song to serve humankind. That's what I love about my job is the very people that I intended for this song to strike, to resonate with them and we're singing this song together. That is such a fulfilling moment as an artist. And then you use that moment, not to bring it into you, but to turn their eyes to the King. That's what I love to do."
