LOUIS GIGLIO
Goliath Must Fall

Its the most timeless underdog story in all of history, David vs. Goliath. A shepherd boy that no one believed in looking up at a nine foot giant that everyone believed was undefeatable. Its a story we apply to business, to sports, to politics...to a wide assortment of challenges and struggles that each of us face in our lives.

And, in every version of this story, we want to see ourselves as David. Its easy to think, "if I could just be like David, I could fight the giants in my life." The giant of fear...the giant of rejection...the giants of anger and addiction.

We all have a giant. That's the bad news. But here's the good news. We are not David. The story of David is not the story about us. Its ultimately a story about Jesus. The one who has slain not just one giant, but every giant. For all times, for all people, Jesus is the ultimate giant slayer. This is the message at the center of "Goliath Must Fall."

There's a remarkable amount of freedom in realizing that Jesus has knocked down your giant...for your good and for His glory. And, when we begin to live in that freedom, not only will we see that Goliath could fall, we see something even more extraordinary. Goliath Must Fall!

Goliath Must Fall
By Jessica Carlisle

The epic tale of David and Goliath is one of the most well known stories in the Bible. On one side of the Valley of Elah stands the Philistine army, with their nine-foot-tall champion named Goliath. On the other side of valley stands the Israelite army, cowering in fear under the leadership of their king named Saul. For forty days Goliath has been taunting the Israelites and holding them in the grip of fear. Day after day he has been challenging them to send out one soldier to face him man to man. But so far, nobody has volunteered.
Perhaps you can relate to the plight of the Israelites. Some kind of giant is standing before you, taunting you, harassing you, and insulting you. Maybe it's fear. Maybe it's anger. Maybe it's a feeling of rejection. Maybe it's the sneaky but all-too-familiar giant of comfort that compels you to live for something lesser. It might even be an addiction.
Whatever this giant is in your life, day after day it has been robbing you of power. You've tried to stop the taunts, but you feel immobilized. Held back. Paralyzed from moving forward. Ultimately, you know you're not living the fullness and freedom of life that God intends for you.
The good news is that God has made a way for these giants to fall. It starts with believing that even though the giant you're battling might be big, it's not bigger than Jesus. In fact, He has already defeated the giants in your life. When He came to this earth, He endured hell for you on the cross and rose from the grave so you could shake off the prospect of a doomed life. He came to set you free from the giants who rise up against you and hold you paralyzed in fear.
Jesus has already overcome the enemy. However, as we read in 1 Peter 5:8, the devil still "prowls around . . . looking for someone to devour." In many ways, he is like a snake with its head cut off. When you kill a snake, you have to be sure to bury its head, because even after death the serpent holds a lethal dose of venom in its fangs. If you step on a dead snake's head, you can still get poisoned. In the same way, even though Jesus broke the power of Satan at the cross, he can still inject his deadly poison into our lives. He is dead but still deadly.
The goal then, as we will discuss in this study, is not to step on the snake's head. In practical terms, this means resisting the devil (see James 4:7), equipping the defenses Jesus has provided (see Ephesians 6:10-18), and leaning into his sufficiency (see Proverbs 3:5). It means remembering that he is your David in the story-and you can never bring down giants through your own courage, willpower, or efforts. It's always Jesus who brings the giant down.
If you truly want to see victory over the giants in your life, you need to understand your dependency on the all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ. Victory is all about trusting in Christ and not about trying to succeed. To take the first step against your dead-but-still-deadly enemy, you've got to make this paradigm shift in your mind. Christ is the only force that brings change.
How do you respond to the notion that Jesus, not you, is the David who has defeated the giant in your life? What are the implications of this for the way you live your life?
Jesus came to earth to crush the power of sin and death, and he has already overcome the enemy. What difference does this make as to how you view the giant in your life?
What are some ways you go about drawing close to Jesus so that you won't step on the venomous head of your defeated enemy?

The Harbinger captured the attention of more than 1 million people this year with its prophetic warning to America. But the book’s ongoing implications should be the real concern behind this profound revelation.

What happens when a nation ignores God’s warnings and the call to return to Him? What happens to nations that actually return to God?

Regardless of how much the world mocks Christians for believing that God’s Word is absolute truth, there are biblical principles and patterns concerning the judgment or redemption of nations—and this revelation holds profound meaning for America.

I wrote about these principles in The Harbinger, a prophetic wake-up call for America released in January 2012 that has since sold more than 1 million copies. The message has obviously resonated with people from all walks of life (it spent the entire year on the New York Times best-seller list), yet there is far more to this continuing story.

It begins more than 2,700 years ago, when God repeatedly called ancient Israel to return to Him after the people He birthed opted to turn away from their God. The very words of the Torah, spoken through Moses to their ancestors in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28, were His first call and His foretelling future calamity if they failed to repent. When the people of Israel’s northern kingdom ignored those words, God sent His prophets to confront them face-to-face with their transgressions.

Even then the people and their leaders refused to listen, hardening their hearts to His message and persecuting the messengers. God finally allowed Israel’s enemies to breach His protective hedge around the nation. Though the subsequent damage was significant, it was limited—proving that even in judgment God was calling the nation to wake up, turn from its self-destructive course and be reconciled to Him.

Israel’s defiant answer to God’s final call is found in Isaiah 9:10: “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.” Despite being in ruins, Israel vowed to rebuild itself stronger than ever—and without God.

Verse 11 describes the beginning of the tragic consequences of that defiance, the nation’s progression to judgment: “Therefore the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and spur his enemies on.”

The answer continues in the verses that follow: “And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still. ... The land is burned up. ... What will you do in the day of punishment, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help?” (Is. 9:12, 19; 10:3).

Thus, Isaiah 9:10 leads to a prophecy of national destruction, fulfilled when the Assyrians returned, laid siege for three years and destroyed the northern kingdom in 722 B.C., and exiled its people.

Louie Giglio's current book, "Goliath Must Fall: Winning the Battle Against Your Giants", entered the Christian Bookseller's Top 50 list in June at #2 and moved up to #1 in July.

  Louie
is author of several other books, such as "Wired: For A Life of Worship,"  "I Am Not But I Know I Am: Welcome to the Story of God," "The Air I Breathe: Worship as a Way of Life", "Relatable," "Indescribable,"  and "The Comeback: It's Not Too Late and You're Never Too Far" (2017).

He also boasts a line of DVDs in which he is featured, including "How Great Is Our God" (named after the Chris Tomlin song of the same name), "Alive", "Life Interrupted", "Canvas" and many more.

Giglio's desire is to see spiritual awakening come to the nation's college campuses and to see the 16 million college students of the nation and around the world come to know God.

In 1985, after finishing seminary, Louie and his wife Shelley began a weekly Bible study called Choice Ministries at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Choice Ministries was a campus-based student ministry where, after several years, over ten percent of the student body attended the weekly study.

In 1995, Louie and his wife moved from their home in Waco, Texas, to Atlanta, Georgia, due to Louie's father who became ill with a brain infection and passed away before Louie made it back to Atlanta. While flying from Texas to Georgia, Louie prayed and asked God what He had in store for his life. Afterwards, he decided to start a national gathering of Christian college students called Passion Conferences.

Passion Conferences became a reality in 1997 with the first conference being held in Austin, TX. It lasted four days, and thousands of young people gathered. With the help of the board of Choice Ministries, Inc., Louie and like-minded campus ministers paved the way for the first of six Passion gatherings (1997, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007) that united over 71,000 college students.

The Passion Movement is based on Louie's life verse, Isaiah 26:8 - "Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts."

In 2007, over 22,000 students gathered in Atlanta, focusing on the "Do Something Now" campaign. This raised $1.5 million dollars for global ministries on six continents.

Louie and the Passion ministry held regional events around the United States in late 2007 and early 2008 and then went to the nations of the world in 2008 with the Passion World Tour.

From 1995-2005, Louie taught weekly at 7:22, a non-denominational Bible study designed to reach and impact single adults in the metro Atlanta area.

PASSION CITY CHURCH

On May 11, 2008, Chris Tomlin announced that he was leaving his church to start a new church in Atlanta with Louie (called Passion City Church). Louie confirmed this rumor on The Passion Podcast on June 27, 2008.

Passion City Church held its first service on February 15, 2009, in Atlanta at The Tabernacle. Louie and his wife were members of North Point Community Church in Atlanta for 13 years until the founding of Passion City Church.

There is no official staff of Passion City Church; however, among the core team are Louie and Shelley Giglio, Chris Tomlin and band, Matt and Beth Redman, David Crowder and Nathan and Christy Nockels, among others.

A 268 GENERATION

The 268 Generation is a radical generation of Christ-followers rooted in the confession of Isaiah 26:8. During the early days of the Passion vision, God connected them to Isaiah 26:8, specifically the last phrase which says, "For Your name and renown are the desire of our souls." The heart of Passion is God's glory, and God is most glorified as a generation emerges with this confession in their mouths. Fueled by a passionate pursuit of God and a desire to spread His glory throughout the earth, all are convinced that life is about God.

More than a conference organization, the Passion movement is headquartered in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta. In addition to these events, millions have connected to Passion through one of several gatherings: OneDay and the Passion Experience Tour.

In 2000, Louie and others formed Sixsteps Records, a record label for Christian worship artists. Sixsteps' list of signed artists includesCrowder, Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Charlie Hall, Kristian Stanfill, and Christy Nockels. It also releases live albums from the Passion conferences. They've produced Passion worship recordings and DVDs, which have sold over one million copies.

Louie Giglio Overcomes Life's Giants

THE PLOTLINE TWIST

There is a twist to the story of David and Goliath: We are not David. Jesus is David in the story of David and Goliath. Jesus is the giant killer. God did not want victory to come about because David was fitted with all the best armor or because he was brave and had an army at his back. God wanted victory to come simply because one young man trusted in Him. The second twist is that our giant is already dead. The victory is already won. “Jesus has already accomplished what He set out to do,” shares Louie. “The final twist is that David’s motivation in this whole thing was the fame of God.” David was motivated by God’s honor and glory and that is our invitation as well.

GIANTS WE ALL FACE

The five most common giants people struggle with in life are the following:
The Giant of Fear - The giant of fear has already fallen. The work is already done by Christ on the cross. When we set our eyes on Him, we will not be shaken. We will rest secure.
The Giant of Rejection - All people battle with some sort of rejection. We learn early in life to compare ourselves with everybody else. This is particularly troubling in today’s modern world where social media is so ever present. Every time a person posts on social media that person is asking, “How do I measure up?” Louie says, “Social media can be a good thing when used well, but if social media is the place where we get our value, then we’re sunk.” The only thing that will help us move past the giant of rejection is to immerse ourselves in the acceptance of Christ. You are worth Jesus to God.
The Giant of Comfort - Most desire to be comfortable, safe and secure. Yet comfortableness and obedience often butt heads. “Trouble arises when the desire for safety and security becomes the dominant theme of our lives. When a relaxation mentality supplants our attentiveness to God’s call on our lives,” reveals Louie.
The Giant of Anger - You can replace anger by reading God’s word, praying for the people you are angry at and choosing to see others through Jesus’ eyes. When you get your eyes off of them and back on Jesus only then can He have full reign in your heart.
The Giant of Addiction - Alcoholism, drugs, and porn are not the only addictions in this generation. Addictions are things we can’t live without. It’s a habit we can’t break. Some people are addicted to money, accomplishments, pain, approval or even people. If there is anything good that can come from addictions, it’s that they remind us we were created to be dependent creatures. We have a God-sized hole that can be filled only with a real relationship with Jesus.
“Our giants have already fallen, because Jesus has made them fall,” shares Louie. The problem is that Satan is after God’s glory. Louie encourages you to remind yourself that those giants don’t need to be giants anymore; pray and listen to the voice of Jesus daily, and let the Holy Spirit lead you step by step on your journey in life.

LOUIE’S GIANTS

Giants come in all shapes and sizes. For Louie, he struggled with the giant of approval and control. As a result, he fell into a deep, dark hole of depression and anxiety. “To put it mildly, I had a breakdown,” shares Louie. During the roughest stretch he was in a different doctor’s office every week and couldn’t sleep at night. “I was a controller who’d found I couldn’t control anymore. I was an approval seeker who’d discovered not everything he did was applauded.” Change for Louie began with praising God, “Worship is simply a shift of attention that allows us to see God better. Worship is like corrective lenses for our souls, bringing God clearer into our view.” At night Louie would name the things which he sought to control, but then he would remind himself that if God wanted a certain result it would happen. As a result, his giants had to stop talking or he chose to stop listening to those giants.

PASSION CONFERENCES

Louie and Shelley, together founded Passion Conferences in 1997, uniting college-aged people in events around the globe. In January, Passion 2017 gathered more than 55,000 students in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome in one of the largest collegiate gatherings in history. Some of the speakers included included Christine Caine, Beth Moore, John Piper, and Levi Lusko. Worship was led by Passion Band, Chris Tomlin, Crowder, Matt Redman, Christy Nockels and Hillsong UNITED. with a surprise appearance by Carrie Underwood, who performed her hit, "Something In The Water."
The students participated in an endeavor to "Make History Together" by coming together to sponsor more than 7,000 children through Compassion International, fulfilling all sponsorships in El Salvador, Rwanda, Tanzania and Indonesia as well as hundreds in Bolivia.

PASSION CITY CHURCH

Passion City Church began with a stirring in the hearts of Louie and Shelley Giglio for the local church. Born out of the Passion Movement (a decades-old movement among the collegiate generation), they sought to plant a local community of faith impacted and informed by the DNA of Passion. With a small team of people, that vision took flight in 2008, as small gatherings began in homes throughout Atlanta. The desire was to foster a family of believers connected by a common faith, on a mission in the city and in the world to amplify the name of Jesus. The first gathering was held on February 15, 2009, in Atlanta at The Tabernacle. From there, God faithfully provided, various locations all over the city of Atlanta, until their first permanent gathering site at 515 Garson Drive.

Louie and Shelly lead the teams at Passion City Church, sixsteprecords, and the Passion Global Institute. Louie is the Visionary Architect and Director of the Passion Movement, comprised of Passion Conferences, Passion City Church, Passion Publishing and sixstepsrecords, and the founder of Passion Global Institute. Shelley is the Chief Strategist, Director of Label Operations and Artist Management for sixstepsrecords, co-founder of the Passion Movement, and leads The GROVE, a gathering for the girls of Atlanta.
