KIRK FRANKLIN
Love Theory

   By Christian Thomasos, Christian Post

Twelve-time GRAMMY winning artist, songwriter and producer, Kirk Franklin's #1 single, "Love Theory" from his Long Live Love CD debuted at Billboard's Hot Gospel Songs chart at #1. "Love Theory" is also Franklin's seventh No. 1 single and the second song of his to debut at #1. Franklin first entered at the top spot in September 2015 with "Wanna Be Happy?," which ruled for 45 weeks, the second-longest-leading hit in the chart's history (after Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It"; 46 weeks, 2007-08).

The CD has spawned numerous chart appearances by other tracks including OK, Just For Me, Father Knows Best, Strong God, Forever/Beautiful Grace and Idols. Amazingly, all appearing in the top 25 at the same time.

For more than twenty-five years Kirk Franklin has been a trailblazer, writing, producing and performing uplifting music which is loved by Christian and secular audiences alike. His body of work has garnered nineteen GRAMMY Awards, 43 Stellar Awards, nine NAACP Image Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three BET Awards, and an American Music Award, among other honors. The most recent GRAMMY came in 2019 for his collaboration on Tori Kelly's "Never Alone" album. It won Gospel Album of the Year.

"Kirk Franklin took me under his wing and saw the passion I have for gospel," said Kelly at the GRAMMY awards. "He made it happen...so Kirk, I love you so much. You are a legend."

Since the release of his last album, the GRAMMY Award-winning Losing My Religion, in 2015, Franklin has been busy touring, cultivating talent through his record label, Fo Yo Soul Recordings, and collaborating with a diverse array of other artists including, Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, Ledisi, Mandisa, Marvin Sapp, Tamela Mann and Tori Kelly. In 2018, he produced Kelly's entire Hiding Place album, for which he recently received his 23rd GRAMMY nomination and 19th win. Franklin also launched the Exodus Music & Arts Festival in partnership with Live Nation Urban last year. And he will host and headline the 2nd annual Exodus Fest on May 26, 2019 in Irving, TX.

In addition to releasing "Love Theory" and finishing up his forthcoming, thirteenth studio album, Franklin performed on the 20th Super Bowl Gospel Celebration in Atlanta, airing on BET on February 2, 2019. He'll also host the 34thAnnual Stellar Gospel Music Awards on March 29, 2019

Franklin's "Wanna Be Happy" from his 11th studio album, was No. 1 on the Gospel Digital Songs and Hot Gospel Songs charts. It actually entered the chart at #1 back in November and didn't budge for weeks.
And "1,2,3 Victory" from the same CD quickly joined it in the top 3. Another single from the album, "My World Needs You" with Sarah Reeves, Tasha Cobbs and Tamela Mann has entered the top 5.
That song won the Dove Award For Contemporary Gospel/Urban Recorded Song of the Year.

Kirk says he's dismayed that some people in the Christian community aren't open to him breaking beyond the boundaries of what they believe gospel music is supposed to sound like.
"If I'm writing and doing music celebrating the Creator, who is the most creative being in the world - I mean, when you look at nature and when you look at all of the beautiful created things - why should I be limited in expressing myself? He's creative, so why shouldn't my music be creative, too?"

Franklin questioned in an interview with The New Yorker. "But everyone in my community, and especially the consumers, they don't see it that way. Which is weird for me."

Franklin, the gospel music industry veteran who has broken the mold with songs like "Stomp," has written and composed some of the most well known songs in the industry.

Even though he's elevated his reach from that of a recording artist and composer to the head of Fo Yo Soul Records (RCA), the 46-year-old star still feels like some members of his community won't accept some of the music he has a desire to make.

"It makes you feel good when you do a song that, sonically, can fit right next to Drake," he said. "But our audience, they don't care. And it hurts that they don't care!"

While he maintains his Christian values, Franklin has made it no secret that he also enjoys mainstream music. Earlier this year, he let over one million fans on Twitter know that he appreciates the talents of singer Bruno Mars.

"OK, I give in, the Bruno Mars album is dope. I guess he said somebody gotta do it," Franklin tweeted.

The message, however, garnered mixed reactions. One fan decided to speak up about Franklin's choice in music by asking, "secular music, Kirk?"

Franklin responded by questioning if all of the social media critic's lifestyle choices were centered around their faith.

"Do you just wear Christian clothes or eat at Christian restaurants or just watch Christian television?" Franklin asked before writing, "love u bro."

While the exchange died down soon after, Franklin has publicly shared his affinity for other artists in the past. In 2015 he complimented Taylor Swift's musical talents when speaking to Hip Hollywood.

"I think she is an incredible songwriter," Franklin told Hip Hollywood about Swift.

Aside from the 27-year-old "Shake It Off" singer, Hip Hollywood reported that Franklin is also a fan of secular artists Kendrick Lamar, Adele and Justin Bieber. Last year, he collaborated with mainstream music artist Pharrell Williams who produced his song "123 Remix."

The gospel music singer and producer has worked hard to usher in new talent in the industry with his record label, and as host and executive producer of the BET gospel music singing competition, "Sunday Best."

"It's very cool to see people get excited about content that is still very vertical," he said in a previous interview with The Christian Post. "That's what I want to do and get involved in. I continue to try to push that agenda."
