What Lies Ahead for America?
What Lies Ahead for America?

JONATHAN MCREYNOLDS
Make Room

Dove Award-winning and Grammy and Stellar award-nominated gospel singer-songwriter Jonathan McReynolds has just released his first ever live LP, Make Room, his third full album and the fourth overall release for the 28-year-old musician. Lead single, I'm Not Lucky, I'm Loved has just hit Billboard's top 20 on the Hot Gospel Songs charts.

The guitarist and singer also holds a Masters in theology from Moody Theological Seminary and is currently an adjunct member of the Columbia College faculty. His music has been cheered on by music icons from Stevie Wonder, Nicki Minaj, and Tori Kelly to gospel giants like CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, and Kirk Franklin, who dubbed McReynolds "the future of gospel music."

The highly-anticipated follow-up to Jonathan's 2015 Life Music: Stage Two, (which spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard gospel chart) was recorded entirely live this past May in Chicago, IL. Additionaly, McReynolds is just finishing a promotional tour for the new music.

Ahead of the album's release, Jonathan shared a music video for lead single I'm Not Lucky, I'm Loved, which was first released in September and debuted at #1 on Billboard's digital gospel songs chart.

The song, which is firmly rooted in gospel tradition and priority, wears its mainstream pop appeal well as Jonathan's incredible voice performs acrobatically around his trademark guitar-gospel style. The song bubbles and shimmers through intimate and joyful dynamics, even breaking into a white-hot guitar solo near the end. The video, coming a few months after the single's audio release, showcases how quickly beloved the song has become by featuring homemade videos of Jonathan's fans singing and dancing along to the new single

Make Room offers 13 tracks. It features artists including Dee-1, The Hamiltones, Travis Greene, Anthony Brown, Brian Courtney Wilson, and more. One of his leading singles from this album is Cycles which took off over social media and led to the viral #CyclesChallenge.

What McReynolds' fans can appreciate is that he takes his time to produce quality music. His last LP, Life Music: Stage Two, released in late 2015, but when he does share new music, it's relatable, timely and provokes introspection.

What was born in his dorm room in the presence of a few friends has graduated to Christian music's biggest stage. And Jonathan, now 28, did it with an incredible voice and a beautifully honest approach to songwriting.

Life Music: Stage Two remained #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart for 4 weeks. It then went on to grab a Grammy nomination, multiple Stellar nominations and a Dove Award win. He brought on yet another popular talent, Tweet, on his latest EP Sessions. This unannounced, surprise release reached the top of the iTunes Christian chart in one night.

"My albums are about being authentic and genuine, pure and transparent. That's who I try to be as a person,"  says the Chicago native. "I'm direct, I'm blunt. I'm not a fan of church cliches and 'Christian-ese'. I'm concerned with showing others and reminding myself how the Faith doesn't just fit every part of life, but should frame every part of life."

In May 2015, Jonathan attained his Masters of Arts in Biblical Studies from Moody Theological Seminary. His contribution to society outside of music is important to him as well. With that, he is an adjunct instructor at his alma mater Columbia College, an official contributor to Huffington Post and the founder of Elihu Nation, a nonprofit organization that promotes wisdom and recently awarded $9k in scholarships.

The Harbinger captured the attention of more than 1 million people this year with its prophetic warning to America. But the book’s ongoing implications should be the real concern behind this profound revelation.

What happens when a nation ignores God’s warnings and the call to return to Him? What happens to nations that actually return to God?

Regardless of how much the world mocks Christians for believing that God’s Word is absolute truth, there are biblical principles and patterns concerning the judgment or redemption of nations—and this revelation holds profound meaning for America.

I wrote about these principles in The Harbinger, a prophetic wake-up call for America released in January 2012 that has since sold more than 1 million copies. The message has obviously resonated with people from all walks of life (it spent the entire year on the New York Times best-seller list), yet there is far more to this continuing story.

It begins more than 2,700 years ago, when God repeatedly called ancient Israel to return to Him after the people He birthed opted to turn away from their God. The very words of the Torah, spoken through Moses to their ancestors in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28, were His first call and His foretelling future calamity if they failed to repent. When the people of Israel’s northern kingdom ignored those words, God sent His prophets to confront them face-to-face with their transgressions.

Even then the people and their leaders refused to listen, hardening their hearts to His message and persecuting the messengers. God finally allowed Israel’s enemies to breach His protective hedge around the nation. Though the subsequent damage was significant, it was limited—proving that even in judgment God was calling the nation to wake up, turn from its self-destructive course and be reconciled to Him.

Israel’s defiant answer to God’s final call is found in Isaiah 9:10: “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.” Despite being in ruins, Israel vowed to rebuild itself stronger than ever—and without God.

Verse 11 describes the beginning of the tragic consequences of that defiance, the nation’s progression to judgment: “Therefore the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and spur his enemies on.”

The answer continues in the verses that follow: “And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still. ... The land is burned up. ... What will you do in the day of punishment, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help?” (Is. 9:12, 19; 10:3).

Thus, Isaiah 9:10 leads to a prophecy of national destruction, fulfilled when the Assyrians returned, laid siege for three years and destroyed the northern kingdom in 722 B.C., and exiled its people.

Recently, Jonathan spoke with Maurette Clark Brown on her radio show. Here are bits of that conversation...

His website says he's a Christian, an artist, a writer, a professor and a philanthropist.
He's Grammy and Stellar nominated and
Dove winning Jonathan McReynolds.
Tell me about this new music, Make Room.

May 5th, we did our first ever live recording and I think it turned out pretty well. There's a lot of incredible stuff going on with music and outside of music.

A lot of recording artists see a lot of shine and money. But your motives have always been pure. It's past 'I want to make good music.' Its the message in the music. I love your songwriting.
I know that's what's important to you. It shows with all your songs and performances.

I definitely just want to do something positive for this generation. We really need it. I need it. So I kind of write what I need.

Tell me about your philanthropy, how important it is for you to give back.

Absolutely. I always say, 'it not what you make, its what you do with what you make.' God has blessed me. According to my uncle, who's my accountant, I'm too quick to give back. But, I just really want this generation to be known as the dopest one. I really want to be a part of the second greatest generation.

We're giving out scholarships. I have a non profit called Elihu Nation. Its all about working on a wiser generation, encouraging, promoting and creating young wisdom carriers and pursuers. Last year, we gave out three three thousand dollar scholarships. This year, we're giving out two five thousand dollar scholarships for juniors, seniors and graduate students. We had hundreds of applications come through. I love doing it.

I see that you've got your Masters of Arts in Biblical Studies?

Yeah, I'm actually at Columbia College. This is going into my fifth year teaching, which makes me feel old.

What inspires you to keep going.
The music industry and philanthropy is a lot.

My mother and grandmother drilled into my head at a young age that, to much is given, much is required. And, I know I've been given a lot of grace, I've been given gifts, a great family. I'm sure there are a lot of things I don't have. But there are a lot of things I do. And, I just feel compelled to do something with it. Having it and hoarding it is just weird for me. Its not just me. There are a lot of people out here doing amazing things. I just want to be a part of that movement.

Thank you for making music that not only I love, but my kids and my teenagers love.
