Hillsong Worship
More Concerned With Obedience Than
Celebrity Praise

A recent
article was written by Jeannie Law, Christian Post Reporter,
regarding Hillsong Worship's "What a Beautiful Name"
song. She reports that the song that came out in 2016, is still riding its enormous success maintaining
at or near #1 on Billboard's Contemporary Christian music charts six
months after its release.
Hillsong
Worship won the "Best Contemporary Christian Music
Performance/Song" award for What a Beautiful Name. In
a statement posted to Twitter celebrating their victory that
night, Hillsong Worship emphasized the message of What a
Beautiful Name.
"JESUS. The most incredible Name & has transformed our lives. Thanks @BrianCHouston
@bobbiehouston & team," tweeted the official Hillsong
account.
"No matter how far/close u feel 2 God, His love is greater, His Name more
powerful/wonderful/beautiful than any other. May this
glorify #JESUS."
It was the Dove Award Winner for Song of the Year and
Worship Recorded
Song of the Year
and
Grammy Winner for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.
Preceeding it with even more longevity was the phenomenal "Oceans (Where Feet May
Fail," by Hillsong United, which was #1 for an
astounding 50 straight weeks and remained in the top 5 three
almost 200 weeks after it was released!
Hillsong UNITED's latest CD, "Wonder" debuted at #13. (Click
here) The sixth studio album from the worship music
collective was released on June 9, topping Billboard's Top
Christian Albums chart dated July 1, earning 20,000
equivalent albums (with 16,000 in traditional sales) for the
week ending June 15, according to Nielsen Music.
The launch single from "Wonder," reached the top 15
followed by "So
Will I (100 Billion X)," which entered the charts at #8.
And,
although the band has had a great impact on both the church
community and young Hollywood they say their main objective
is to walk in obedience and devotion to God.
"What a Beautiful Name" became the praise and worship band's first
leader on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart in February
2017. Featured on Hillsong Worship's 25th live album, Let
There Be Light, "What A Beautiful Name" continues
to break chart records. Capitalizing on the song's success, Hillsong debuted the self-titled EP, "What A Beautiful
Name." The song, originally sung and co-written by
Brooke Ligertwood, features six different versions of
the tune performed with different arrangements.
The
following is an edited transcript of The Christian Post's
interview with Hillsong Worship's Brooke Ligertwood in which
she talks about their hit song, "What A Beautiful Name,"
and shares her personal thoughts on the impact their
ministry is having on celebrities.
"What a
Beautiful Name" has exploded with success. When writing
this song, did you ever anticipate that so many people would
resonate with it?
Ligertwood:
Nope! We had hoped that it might resonate with our own
congregation and help contribute to our weekend services.
The reach and impact it has had outside of our church in
such a short space of time was certainly not planned or
anticipated. It's very humbling. It's a God thing.
What do you
believe makes "What A Beautiful Name" stand out with
fans?
Ligertwood: The first night we introduced it in church,
we realized it connected with people even more than we'd
hoped. We saw faith built in the room, expectancy rise and
victory confessed. I think within the song there is a
balance of sound theology about God revealing Himself to
humanity in and through Christ, personal lyrics about what
that means for the individual, and then strong corporate
confession about what that means for us today.
Honestly, though, you can analyze all you want but you can never explain
away the God factor. Sometimes God just decides to breathe
on something and it's completely His prerogative.
Why is it
important for people to understand that God is "Beautiful,"
"Wonderful" and "Powerful" all in one and not just
one or the other?
Ligertwood: This song is about the person of Jesus
Christ and a multi-faceted revelation of His
infinitely-faceted glory. The God we worship is Jesus - He
is the image of the invisible God - and if we dare seek Him
for who He really is rather than pursue an idea of Him that
fits into our tidy boxes, He will blow our minds.
In an
interview with BREATHEcast Selena Gomez named you her
all-time "favorite" worship singer. How has it been for you,
being able to impact others that have so much influence in
this generation?
Ligertwood: That's lovely, but I don't think it's
necessarily particularly healthy to give those kinds of
thoughts any time.
Those who have had the most impact and influence throughout history and
certainly the people who've had the most impact and
influence on me personally have been basically entirely
unaware of any such influence and made their chief concern
their personal devotion and obedience, and the pleasure of
God in the hidden things of their lives.
What is
coming next for Hillsong Worship?
Ligertwood: There's a bunch of stuff I don't think I'm
allowed to talk about yet, so I'll have to give you a very
generic answer I'm afraid! We have a specialized release
coming later in the year which I'm sure you'll hear about
when it's the right time, and then our ongoing commitment to
resourcing both our church and the wider church with songs
of worship will see us continuing our near 30-year legacy of
writing and capturing such songs!

Worship Tells The
"What A Beautiful Name" Song Story
What hides in the name of Jesus?
The name of Jesus encompasses more
than we can hope or imagine - more beauty, more wonder, more power.
Most of the song "What A Beautiful Name" was penned in a glorified
cubicle in the suburbs of Sydney over a few days in December 2015.
From there, we spent months crafting the lyrics to riff on our core
scriptures - Hebrews 1:1-4 and Colossians 1:15-20, 26-27 - yet be
simple enough to make sense on a first reading.
Hebrews 1:1-4 expresses with clarity and conciseness the supremacy of
Jesus Christ - the radiance of God's glory, the exact expression of
His being, the creative conduit of His power. Jesus is God's Word:
powerful, authoritative and utterly supreme. He is the wonder of
salvation, who reconciled us to God.
"In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many
times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to
us by his Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2, NIV)
To know God and to worship Him ("to enjoy Him forever") is the most
fundamental reason for our existence. As Jesus reveals the great
mysteries of God, we come to know more of who God is, glimpsing new
facets of His beauty, wonder and power.
"Beauty" evokes the tenderness of His love and the sweetness of His
presence. "Wonder" speaks to our gratitude for salvation, awe at the
lengths of His sacrifice. "Power" affirms His supremacy and
Sovereignty - an exhortation to remember our access to the power of
God in every situation, as we call upon and declare the Name of
Jesus.
What a beautiful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
Jesus has the Name above all
others. Anything that we can name - from our greatest triumphs to
our greatest challenges -comes under the authority of His Name. This
song confesses that no greater beauty or source of wonder exists
outside of Jesus, "the radiance of God's glory" (Hebrews 1:3). The
song is also a statement that Jesus has no rival or equal. His power
is unmatched and absolute.
Perhaps some of us understand God loves us through the death and
resurrection of Jesus, but haven't grasped His power, ability and
will to move strongly in our present circumstances. Or perhaps, we
understand God as the supreme, omnipotent Deity He is, but have
never known Him close and tender, as a friend acquainted with the
depths of our humanity, knowing our flaws cannot perturb His love.
Our prayer for this song is that we can all enter into a deeper,
more lateral, revelation of the person of Jesus Christ - the epitome
of beauty.
